John is a cosmopolitan award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles who is passionate about nature, conservation and science films. In addition to the nature-themed films, John Dutton Productions, produces a diverse array of films for corporations and non-profit organizations. Filming services also extended to behind-the-scenes filming of feature films (“Pearl Harbor” for Herzog Productions), and for TV (the making-of Oprah’s 50th mega-birthday celebration). John Dutton is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Over the past 20 years his work has taken him from the bustling red carpets of Hollywood to the remotest beaches of Indonesia and the Solomon Islands, serving as Director, Producer, Cameraman, Editor and Writer on a diverse series of documentaries and films.

With a background in biology and geology and a fascination for science and conservation, John produces blue-chip science and wildlife films for ORF Enterprises and their international broadcaster partners, Smithsonian TV, ARTE, ZDF; short documentaries for NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration), U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, the Smithsonian Institute, as well as for NGO’s such as National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, WWF, Wildcoast International, Ocean Ecology Network, ProNatura and The Nature Conservancy.

John filmed for the BBC’s Future Reptiles (an episode in the series Dragons Alive). His independent short documentary, The Jurassic Journey was awarded “Best Conservation Film” at the Santa Barbara Ocean Film Festival 2007.

His award-winning short film, The Pacific Leatherback , commissioned by NOAA, is on permanent exhibit at the Monterey Bay Exploration Center in Santa Cruz, California, and has been selected by U.S. and international film festivals - awarded Best Cinematography, and Best Short Documentary at the North Europe Fusion International Film Festival.

Since 2013, John has collaborated with Austrian wildlife television production companies that specialize in blue-chip films. He has developed, written, and field produced several award-winning programs for ScienceVision Filmproduktion The Canary Islands - Life at the Limit (Grand Prix, Festival de L'oiseu), Making of an Ancient Forest (multiple award winning and Emmy Award® Documentary Nominated for Best Cinematography), Styria: Region Unlimited (REMI Gold Winner Worldfest Houston), and Behind National Park 360º.

He has also served as a pitch-package writing and development consultant to Interspot (Hell and Paradise: Russia’s Wild Sea). His two latest blue-chip films currently in production, The Hudson River-Journey Into The Wild, and Qatar: Secrets of the Pearl Peninsula, were written and developed for Skyland Productions.

In Hollywood, John’s work includes filming for iconic producers - Oprah Winfrey, Jon Peters and John Goldstone; He has filmed behind-the-scenes on feature films; edits actors’ promotional reels, and creates social media content and produces music videos. He also has extensive experience producing corporate films.

John is a member of BAFTA (British Association of Film and Television Arts), the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences, in Los Angeles, and the International Documentary Association (IDA). He participates as a preliminary judge on film festival committees, including the Jackson Wild Film Festival, Jackson Hole Media Awards, and the International Documentary Awards.
